Bernd Zimmer

Published in 2011 by Hirmer, this monograph serves as a comprehensive overview of the artistic career of Bernd Zimmer, one of the most prominent representatives of the 'Neue Wilde' or 'New Fauves' movement in Germany. The book was produced to coincide with major retrospective exhibitions of his work, documenting his transition from the raw, expressive figuration of the late 1970s and early 1980s to his later, more atmospheric investigations into geological formations and cosmic phenomena.

The volume features extensive documentation of his large-scale painting practice, emphasizing his use of vibrant color and gestural brushwork. Designed to reflect the intellectual rigor of Zimmer’s dialogue with nature and perception, the publication places his work within the broader context of post-war German contemporary art. It received attention from art historians and critics for its detailed cataloging of his evolving stylistic trajectory and his persistent interest in the intersection between human experience and the natural world.
