Where it came from
Richard Perkins, a dedicated maritime historian and amateur photographer, began compiling these meticulous identification albums in the mid-20th century. Recognizing a need for accurate, standardized visual data for the Royal Navy, he spent decades documenting every class of British warship with detailed annotations and precise hand-drawn sketches. His work evolved from a practical tool for naval officers into an exhaustive archive that preserved the technical specifications and silhouettes of vessels during a period of rapid technological shift.
The 2018 publication by the Naval Institute Press serves as a definitive, high-quality reproduction of Perkins's original labor of love. It was designed to bridge the gap between archival research and accessible reference material for naval enthusiasts and historians. The work is widely regarded for its unparalleled level of detail regarding ship modifications and weaponry, having been curated to honor the integrity of Perkins’s original drafting style while providing modern researchers with a structured, reliable resource for maritime identification.
