British Warship Recognition : The Perkins Identification Albums : Volume IV

The Perkins Identification Albums represent the lifelong work of Richard Perkins, a dedicated maritime historian and enthusiast who spent decades documenting the visual evolution of the Royal Navy. Volume IV is part of a comprehensive archival series that captures the meticulous silhouettes, deck plans, and technical details Perkins compiled during the mid-twentieth century. This specific edition, published by Pen & Sword in 2017, serves to bring his previously private, hand-annotated research to a wider audience of naval historians and modelers.

The design of these albums is grounded in the tradition of official recognition manuals intended for rapid vessel identification at sea. Perkins employed a pragmatic, clinical approach to layout, emphasizing standardized views and clear distinctions between vessel classes. Upon its release in the digital era, the series was received by the maritime community as an essential reference work, praised for preserving a level of granular, observational data that has largely been superseded by modern radar and satellite technology.
