Where it came from
The 1988 Belser edition of Das Schachbuch des Jacobus de Cessolis serves as a modern facsimile and scholarly exploration of the medieval treatise 'Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium ac popularium super ludo scachorum.' Originally written by the Dominican friar Jacobus de Cessolis around 1300, the work gained immense popularity in the Middle Ages by using the game of chess as a moral allegory for social hierarchy and ethical conduct.
Chiara Frugoni, a renowned historian specializing in medieval culture and iconography, curated this specific volume to highlight the artistic and social context of the original manuscripts. Published by the esteemed house of Belser, the book reflects the publisher's long-standing commitment to high-quality art historical reproductions. It is widely respected for bridging the gap between rigorous academic inquiry and the aesthetic appreciation of medieval book illumination.
