Gert & Uwe Tobias

This publication was released in 2007 by the Whitechapel Gallery to coincide with the first major solo exhibition in the United Kingdom of the Transylvanian-born brothers, Gert and Uwe Tobias. The book serves as a comprehensive survey of their work, which draws heavily on the folk traditions and aesthetics of their native Romania, while simultaneously engaging with the history of the European avant-garde and graphic design of the early 20th century.

The volume captures the duo’s signature approach to woodcut printing, a medium they revived through large-scale, brightly colored, and often surreal compositions. By synthesizing folkloric motifs with modernist abstraction, the artists created a unique visual vocabulary that bridges disparate artistic eras. The publication was met with critical interest for its high-quality reproduction of these labor-intensive techniques, helping to solidify their position within the contemporary art scene.
