Giger's Alien

Giger's Alien was published in 1989 by Lappan Verlag, serving as a comprehensive visual chronicle of the Swiss artist H. R. Giger’s contribution to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film. The book documents the conceptual development of the iconic Xenomorph, featuring a vast array of the original sketches, airbrush paintings, and biomechanical designs that Giger created while working in Hollywood. It was produced to satisfy the intense interest from fans and art critics in the dark, surrealist aesthetic that defined the film's visual language and earned Giger an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The volume captures the collaborative tension and creative process behind the film's production, providing a rare glimpse into the transition from Giger’s personal nightmares to cinematic reality. The presentation of the work reflects the artist's meticulous, industrial-organic style, which emphasizes textures of bone and metal fused together. Upon its release, the collection was recognized as a definitive primary source for students of practical creature design and science fiction art, solidifying Giger's status as a transformative figure in late 20th-century surrealism.
