Where it came from
Commissioned by the National Teachers' Association of Sweden, Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige was originally conceived as a geography textbook for children. Selma Lagerlöf spent three years studying Swedish nature, folklore, and regional history to craft a narrative that would instill a love for the country while educating pupils on its diverse landscape. The book was published in two volumes between 1906 and 1907 by Albert Bonnier.
Lagerlöf drew inspiration from adventure literature like The Jungle Book, utilizing the framework of a mischievous boy transformed into a tomte and traveling on the back of a goose to traverse the provinces. The design and layout were intended to be accessible for school-age readers, featuring illustrations by John Bauer and others in later editions that became iconic symbols of Swedish romanticism. Upon its release, it was met with immense critical acclaim, eventually earning Lagerlöf the Nobel Prize in Literature and becoming a cornerstone of Swedish cultural identity.
