Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige

Originally commissioned by the National Teachers' Association of Sweden in 1902, Selma Lagerlöf wrote Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige as a geography textbook for primary schools. Published in two volumes between 1906 and 1907, the story follows a young boy who is shrunken by a house gnome and journeys across Sweden on the back of a goose. Lagerlöf blended folklore, local history, and vivid landscapes to create a narrative that educated children on the nation's diverse regions and environmental habitats.

The book became a landmark in Swedish literature, establishing Lagerlöf as a central figure in the literary canon and contributing to her Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. While the 2014 JiaHu Books edition represents a modern English-language printing, it honors the legacy of the original text, which has been translated into over thirty languages. The narrative remains deeply influential, not only as a classic of children's literature but as a fundamental text that shaped the identity and cultural perception of the Swedish landscape for generations of readers.
