Where it came from
Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige was originally commissioned by the Swedish National Teachers' Association in 1902 to serve as a geography reader for primary schools. Selma Lagerlöf spent three years studying nature and folklore to craft a narrative that would weave educational content into a fantastical journey. The story follows a mischievous boy shrunk to a diminutive size who travels across the provinces on the back of a goose, providing a comprehensive tour of Sweden's landscape and cultural identity.
This 1981 edition, published by Bonniers juniorförlag, reflects the enduring legacy of the work as a staple of Swedish literature. Lagerlöf’s prose was intended to be both instructional and immersive, successfully blending pedagogical rigor with the imaginative wonder of a fable. The book was immediately received with great acclaim, playing a pivotal role in Lagerlöf becoming the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909, and it remains one of the most recognizable cultural touchstones in Scandinavia.
