Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige: Av Selma Lagerlöf

Commissioned by the National Teachers' Association of Sweden in 1902, Selma Lagerlöf was tasked with creating a school geography reader that would make the study of Sweden's landscapes and culture engaging for children. Published in two volumes between 1906 and 1907, the story follows a young boy named Nils who is shrunk by a tomte and joins a flock of wild geese on a journey across the country, learning about the geography and folklore of each province along the way.

The 1908 edition solidified the work as a cornerstone of Swedish literature, blending pedagogical intent with imaginative storytelling. Lagerlöf’s narrative design was intentionally pastoral and didactic, drawing heavily on her deep knowledge of regional legends. The book was an immediate critical success, ultimately helping Lagerlöf secure the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909, and it remains one of the most recognizable cultural artifacts in Scandinavia.
