The design of early twentieth-century editions of the work often reflected the Swedish national romantic style, emphasizing the connection between the country's rugged topography and its cultural identity. While the full novel cemented Lagerlöf's status, eventually leading to her becoming the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, these smaller selections were instrumental in standardizing the work within the Swedish school curriculum.
