Where it came from
Selma Lagerlöf wrote Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige in 1906, originally commissioned by the Swedish National Teachers' Association as a geography textbook for children. The intention was to create a reader that would teach students about the landscapes, history, and folklore of Sweden in an engaging narrative format, moving away from dry academic recitations to a more immersive storytelling approach.
The book follows a young, mischievous boy named Nils who is transformed into a tiny gnome and travels across the country on the back of a goose. Lagerlöf’s masterful blend of naturalistic observation and Swedish mythology was an immediate critical and popular success, and it ultimately helped her become the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. The work has since become a cornerstone of Swedish cultural identity and remains one of the most widely translated books in the nation's history.
