Reinhold Neibuhr on politics

Reinhold Niebuhr on Politics, published by Scribner in 1960, serves as a comprehensive anthology of the influential American theologian's political writings. Edited by Harry R. Davis and Robert C. Good, the volume was curated to consolidate Niebuhr's complex theories on power, justice, and human nature into a single accessible reference. At a time when Cold War tensions were high, the book provided scholars and policymakers with a clear view of Niebuhr's Christian realism, which challenged both naive optimism and rigid moralism in foreign affairs.

The design of the volume reflects the scholarly aesthetic typical of mid-century academic publishing, favoring utility and intellectual gravitas over decorative flourish. Scribner produced the book to solidify Niebuhr's legacy as a public intellectual whose influence extended well beyond the pulpit. Upon its release, the collection was well received by the academic community, praised for its clarity in synthesizing Niebuhr's sprawling body of essays into a coherent ideological framework that remained deeply relevant to the political debates of the era.
