Where it came from
This volume is part of the Author's National Edition of The Writings of Mark Twain, published by P. F. Collier & Son in 1917. Following the death of Samuel Clemens in 1910, publishers sought to consolidate his expansive literary output into uniform, multivolume sets that would appeal to the growing middle-class home library market. This specific edition aimed to provide a comprehensive and accessible collection of his works, including the lesser-known sequel Tom Sawyer Abroad and the mystery-themed Tom Sawyer, Detective.
The design of the National Edition reflected the standard aesthetic for early 20th-century scholarly sets, featuring cloth binding, gold-stamped lettering, and high-quality paper stock meant to withstand frequent reading. While Twain himself had varying degrees of input on his earlier collected editions, this set was produced during a period when his literary estate and publishers worked to cement his status as an American icon. It was received as a definitive resource for readers looking to move beyond the primary classics and explore the breadth of his storytelling.
