Tom Sawyer abroad, Tom Sawyer, detective

Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective were originally published as separate novellas in the 1890s, serving as sequels to Mark Twain's iconic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. These works were born out of Twain's ongoing exploration of the Mississippi River setting and his desire to place his famous characters in more experimental, satirical contexts, with Abroad taking the boys on a fantastical balloon voyage to the Sahara and Detective leaning into the popular mystery tropes of the Gilded Age.

The 1924 edition by Harper & Brothers reflects the publisher's long-standing stewardship of Twain's bibliography following the author's death in 1910. By this period, the works were firmly established as staple library and classroom literature, presented in uniform editions designed to appeal to both younger readers and established collectors of the Twain canon. While these sequels never achieved the same cultural ubiquity as the original novel, this printing is representative of the enduring effort to keep Twain's complete body of work in circulation throughout the early twentieth century.
