Where it came from
Published by Radius Books in 2019, this monograph showcases the extensive photographic work of Tomas van Houtryve. Known for his investigative and often border-crossing approach to photojournalism, van Houtryve frequently utilizes drone technology and historical archival research to examine the invisible lines of geopolitical conflict. The volume serves as a comprehensive collection of his series that explore the intersection of surveillance, technology, and human experience, reflecting a career spent documenting the fringes of modern society.
The book’s design prioritizes a clean, minimalist aesthetic to allow the stark, often haunting imagery to command full attention. Radius Books, a non-profit publisher known for high-quality art publications, curated this project to emphasize the narrative arcs within van Houtryve’s long-term assignments. It was received as a significant contribution to contemporary documentary photography, particularly for its ability to provoke discourse on the ethics of aerial observation and the permanence of historical memory in the digital age.
