Where it came from
Released in 2005 on the Chandos label, this recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte was produced as part of the label's commitment to high-quality opera in the English language. Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a renowned authority on Mozart's works, led the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a versatile cast to capture the opera's intricate balance of Singspiel humor and profound Masonic symbolism.
The production utilized the English National Opera translation, aiming to make the complex libretto more accessible to a contemporary audience while maintaining the musical rigor expected of a Chandos release. The ensemble cast was carefully selected to blend established operatic voices with rising talent, receiving critical recognition for the clarity of its diction and Mackerras's brisk, nuanced pacing, which emphasized the dramatic momentum of Mozart's final operatic masterpiece.
