Where it came from
De Cuba was released in 1995 under the Javelin label, marking a significant period for Los Van Van as they continued to refine their signature songo rhythm. Founded by bassist and bandleader Juan Formell in 1969, the group became a pillar of Cuban popular music by blending traditional son cubano with elements of jazz, rock, and funk. This album captured the ensemble during a time when they were increasingly reaching international audiences, solidifying their status as the premier dance orchestra in Cuba.
The production on this record highlights Formell's meticulous approach to arrangement, which prioritized tight horn sections and infectious, syncopated basslines designed for the dance floor. The design and sound aesthetics of this era reflected the group's ability to maintain a distinctly Cuban identity while experimenting with modern synthesis and electronic textures. Critically, the album was received as a testament to Formell's enduring influence, showcasing the evolution of a band that had successfully navigated decades of shifting musical landscapes without losing its foundational appeal.
