De Cuba Los Van Van

Released in 1996 under the Saludos Amigos label, De Cuba serves as a high-fidelity introduction to the sound of Los Van Van, the legendary Cuban ensemble founded by Juan Formell. The album was compiled during a period when the group’s unique fusion of son, jazz, funk, and rock—often termed songo—was gaining significant international momentum. It was designed to package some of the band's most infectious dance rhythms for global audiences, effectively acting as a bridge between the vibrant Havana nightlife and the burgeoning world music circuit of the late nineties.

The production philosophy behind the album emphasizes Formell’s signature use of electric bass and violin arrangements, which broke away from traditional charanga conventions. Los Van Van had spent decades evolving their sound in Cuban dance halls, and this release reflects that maturity, prioritizing seamless grooves and the precise, polyrhythmic interplay of the rhythm section. Upon its release, the collection was well received by critics for preserving the raw energy of the band's live performances while providing a accessible entry point for listeners unfamiliar with the specific nuances of Cuban dance music.
