De Cuba Los Van Van

De Cuba was released in 1990 during a pivotal period for Los Van Van, the iconic Cuban ensemble founded by bassist and composer Juan Formell. The album emerged as the group continued to refine 'songo,' the rhythm Formell pioneered by fusing traditional Cuban son with jazz, funk, and rock influences. Recording in Havana during the early stages of the Special Period, the group used their music to maintain a vital connection with their local audience while navigating the complex socio-economic challenges facing Cuba at the time.

Musically, the album highlights Formell’s sophisticated approach to arranging and his ability to integrate elaborate horn sections with catchy, danceable vocal melodies. The production emphasizes the interplay between the bass and the rhythm section, which became the hallmark of the Los Van Van sound. As the record label Artex focused on distributing the band's work internationally to showcase contemporary Cuban music, the release was received as a definitive statement of the group's ongoing evolution and their undisputed status as the primary orchestra of Cuban dance music.
