Der Nussknacker (Gesamtaufnahme), Dornröschen (Highlights)

This 1970s Decca release features Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s complete ballet score for The Nutcracker paired with highlights from The Sleeping Beauty. Conducted by Richard Bonynge and performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the recording exemplifies the high fidelity standards of the era’s classical music scene. Bonynge, known for his meticulous approach to ballet repertoire, sought to capture the rhythmic precision and lush textures essential to Tchaikovsky’s most iconic compositions.

The production came out of a period when the Decca label was aggressively expanding its catalog of orchestral classics, often utilizing the National Philharmonic Orchestra as a flexible, expert ensemble for studio recordings. The release was well received by critics for its balance of vibrant, danceable tempos and sonic clarity. It remains a notable entry in the late twentieth-century discography, serving as a testament to the collaborative partnership between Bonynge and the Decca engineering teams who prioritized transparency in complex, large-scale romantic orchestrations.
