Where it came from
Felt, the debut collaborative album between rappers Murs and Slug of Atmosphere, emerged in 2002 from the thriving independent hip-hop scene centered around the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. The project was born from a mutual respect between the two artists, who sought to challenge themselves by crafting an entire concept album dedicated to themes of obsession and admiration for specific actresses, with this first installment focusing on Christina Ricci.
The album's production, handled primarily by The Grouch of Living Legends, leaned into a distinct, lo-fi aesthetic that defined the underground sound of the early 2000s. Its reception was marked by praise for the artists' chemistry and the novelty of the conceptual framework, helping to solidify the reputation of both Murs and Slug as architects of a more introspective and narrative-driven style of rap that resonated deeply with the burgeoning independent music community.
