Where it came from
The 1996 release of the Gigi soundtrack by TCM Turner Classic Movies Music was produced to coincide with the restoration and reissue of the 1958 Vincente Minnelli-directed musical. The film, based on the novella by Colette, was a hallmark of the Arthur Freed production unit at MGM, featuring a score by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. This specific reissue aimed to bring the high-fidelity sound of the original studio tapes to a new generation of listeners, preserving the lush orchestral arrangements that defined the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals.
The design of this release reflects the archival focus of the Turner Classic Movies Music label, which sought to treat film scores with the same reverence as classical compositions. By pairing the iconic songs—such as the title track and 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls'—with supplemental historical notes, the packaging was intended to provide context for the film’s status as a Best Picture winner. It was received as a definitive sonic document of the production, appreciated by collectors for its improved audio clarity compared to earlier iterations.
