Where it came from
Released in 2013 by the label Le Bricoleur, this recording features the vocal ensemble Psallentes performing selections from the Codex Calixtinus. The Codex itself is a 12th-century manuscript traditionally attributed to Pope Calixtus II, serving as a comprehensive guide for pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago to Compostela. It is historically significant for containing some of the earliest examples of polyphonic music in the Western tradition.
The ensemble Psallentes, directed by Hendrik Vanden Abeele, focuses on the performance of early liturgical music with a commitment to historical authenticity. For this project, the group aimed to capture the meditative and resonant quality of the original manuscript's compositions. The recording was well received by early music critics for its austere and atmospheric interpretation, which seeks to evoke the sonic environment of medieval pilgrimage sites.
