Where it came from
Kintsukuroi was developed as the soundtrack for a collaborative dance opera by Dutch musician Spinvis, known for his poetic lyrical style, and cellist Saartje Van Camp. The project premiered in 2014, emerging from a desire to blend modern atmospheric indie-pop with theatrical performance art, drawing its thematic inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with gold to honor the history of an object.
The album serves as a documentation of this multidisciplinary production, with the music designed to underscore the fluid movements and narrative arcs of the stage show. The composition leans heavily into delicate, layered instrumentation, reflecting the introspective and melancholic tone characteristic of Spinvis’s broader work, and was received by critics as an evocative, experimental extension of his established sound.
