L'Œuvre Pour Violon & Piano

Released in 2008 by the French label Integral Classic, this recording captures the sonatas for violin and piano by the nineteenth-century composer Louise Farrenc. Farrenc, a highly regarded pedagogue and pianist at the Paris Conservatory during her lifetime, saw her chamber works fall into obscurity for decades before experiencing a significant scholarly and performative revival in the early 21st century. This collection serves as a definitive exploration of her late-Romantic language, which balances rigorous classical structure with expressive, lyrical themes.

The performances by violinist Gaëtane Prouvost and pianist Laurent Cabasso are noted for their technical clarity and commitment to restoring Farrenc’s reputation as a vital voice in French chamber music. The project reflects a broader trend among European labels to document under-represented composers, aiming to provide a high-fidelity reference for performers and historians. Upon its release, it was praised by classical critics for its sensitive interpretation and for bringing these demanding, sophisticated compositions back into the contemporary concert repertoire.
