Where it came from
The Markus-Passion, BWV 247, remains one of Bach's most enigmatic compositions, as the original autograph score is lost. This 2018 recording on the Christophorus label represents a modern reconstruction attempt, drawing upon the musical conventions of the mid-18th century to breathe life into a work whose surviving libretto was originally penned by Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander.
Conductor Felix Koch led the Neumeyer Consort and the Gutenberg-Kammerchor in this performance, aiming to present a historically informed interpretation that balances structural rigor with expressive emotional depth. The production was well-received within the specialist community for its clear, transparent acoustic and the committed vocal performances of the soloists, serving as a significant scholarly and artistic effort to fill a notable gap in the Bach choral canon.
