Where it came from
Reflex was released in 2021 on the Double Moon Records label as a significant follow-up in the discography of Phillip Dornbusch’s Projektor. The album emerged from the Berlin contemporary jazz scene, reflecting a period of creative expansion for the ensemble as they sought to synthesize complex, modern arrangements with the improvisational spontaneity characteristic of the quintet’s collaborative dynamic.
The album’s design and sonic identity were shaped by Dornbusch’s vision of a 'projector,' intending to cast a focused light on the interplay between individual instrumental voices. By blending structured composition with fluid, atmospheric textures, the project was well-received by European jazz critics for its nuanced approach to group interaction and its sophisticated grasp of tonal color within the modern jazz tradition.
