Where it came from
Released independently in 2000, this self-titled CD represents a niche effort by the artist Rikki Chaplin. Given the 'Not On Label' designation, this project sits firmly in the realm of grassroots music production, reflecting the late-nineties trend of artists taking advantage of affordable digital home recording and CD-R duplication technology to distribute their work directly to fans without the oversight or distribution networks of established record labels.
The album serves as a document of a specific period in independent pop-rock, characterized by a raw, unpolished aesthetic that prioritized personal creative expression over industry trends. The design and production are minimal, likely reflecting the artist's own hand in the visual presentation. Because this release did not benefit from professional marketing or major distribution, it remained a localized artifact, primarily known to those within the artist's immediate community or discovered through early internet music forums.
