Sonatas & Partitas For Solo Violin • Vol. I

Released in 2012 on the Oehms Classics label, this recording features the violinist Rüdiger Lotter performing the first volume of Johann Sebastian Bach's seminal Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. These works, composed around 1720 during Bach's tenure in Köthen, represent the pinnacle of Baroque polyphonic writing for a single melodic instrument, challenging the performer to suggest complex harmonic textures through a strictly monophonic medium.

Rüdiger Lotter, known for his work with the period-instrument ensemble Hofkapelle München, approaches these masterpieces through the lens of Historically Informed Performance. By utilizing gut strings and a baroque bow, Lotter aims to strip away the heavy romanticized traditions of the twentieth century in favor of a leaner, dance-influenced articulation. Critics have noted the recording for its intellectual rigor and the clarity of Lotter's phrasing, positioning it as a distinct entry in the extensive discography of these oft-recorded compositions.
