Sonatas For Violoncello, Violin & Basso Continuo

Released in 2012 by Oehms Classics, this recording features a collection of sonatas by Giovanni Benedetto Platti, a Venetian-born composer who spent the majority of his career in the service of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. Platti is recognized for bridging the late Baroque and early Classical styles, and this album highlights his sophisticated approach to chamber music, which often incorporates demanding technical flourishes and a distinctively expressive melodic vocabulary.

The recording showcases a period-informed performance by harpsichordist Florian Birsak, violinist Rüdiger Lotter, and cellist Sebastian Hess. The ensemble sought to emphasize the interplay between the violoncello and violin within the basso continuo framework, aiming to capture the refined elegance of the 18th-century courtly environment in which these works were originally performed. It was received by critics as a precise and well-balanced interpretation of Platti's often overlooked instrumental repertoire.
