Where it came from
Released in 2008 by Sony Music, this compilation serves as a retrospective tribute to the legacy of Billy T. James, a foundational figure in New Zealand comedy. Born William James Te Wehi Taitoko, he rose to national prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming a cultural icon for his ability to weave Māori heritage with sharp, observational humor. The collection was curated to preserve his influence on New Zealand’s national identity and performance style.
The album distills the wit and timing that defined his television career, particularly his work on sketch programs like 'Radio Times' and 'The Billy T. James Show'. His comedic approach, characterized by a mix of slapstick, musical parody, and cultural commentary, was designed to bridge social divides within New Zealand society. At the time of its release, the CD acted as a reminder of his enduring status as an archetypal kiwi entertainer who successfully navigated the complexities of race and class through laughter.
