Where it came from
This collection compiles the essential Prestige Records output of jazz guitarist Bill Jennings, recorded during a pivotal window between 1959 and 1960. These sessions, featuring the soulful organ work of Brother Jack McDuff, capture the transition of the jazz guitar trio into the high-energy soul-jazz and hard bop sensibilities that defined the late fifties. The sessions were originally produced for the Prestige label, known at the time for its lean, efficient approach to capturing the raw, improvisational chemistry of New York's club-circuit musicians.
The 2018 release by Fresh Sound Records functions as a definitive retrospective of this partnership, utilizing archival master tapes to restore Jennings' understated yet rhythmic guitar style. Fresh Sound, a label specialized in reissuing overlooked jazz gems, curated this set to showcase the interplay between Jennings and McDuff before the latter achieved broader commercial fame. The collection has been received by critics as a vital document of the era's rhythmic pocket, highlighting Jennings as a master of the blues-drenched, single-note phrasing that influenced subsequent generations of jazz guitarists.
