The Ellipse

Released in 2022 on the Abalone Productions label, The Ellipse serves as a significant entry in the discography of French violinist and composer Régis Huby. The project showcases his large ensemble, an expansive configuration designed to explore the intersection of contemporary classical music, improvised jazz, and electro-acoustic textures. Huby, known for his work with the Orchestre National de Jazz, conceived the ensemble to facilitate complex, layered arrangements that demand high levels of collaborative precision from his fellow musicians.

The album's design and composition reflect Huby's ongoing interest in fluid, evolving structures that defy rigid categorization. By utilizing a large group, he was able to create dense, shimmering soundscapes that highlight both individual soloists and the collective timbre of the group. Upon its release, the project was noted for its ambitious scope and the intricate balance between written scores and spontaneous performance, solidifying Huby's reputation as a thoughtful arranger within the European avant-garde scene.
