Volumen XIV. Juan Formell Y Los Van Van

Volumen XIV was released in 1999 as part of the storied career of Los Van Van, the legendary Cuban musical group founded by bassist Juan Formell in 1969. By the late 1990s, the band had become an institution of Cuban popular music, known for pioneering the songo rhythm and blending traditional son cubano with jazz, rock, and funk elements. This specific collection emerged during a period of sustained international touring and critical acclaim for the ensemble.

The album reflects Formell's sophisticated approach to arrangements, characterized by intricate horn sections and driving percussion that defined the timba genre. Throughout their history, the band's visual identity often centered on the vibrancy and movement of Cuban dance culture. This release was produced under Sony Music's marketing umbrella to capture the renewed global interest in Cuban music at the turn of the millennium, following the success of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon, which helped introduce Los Van Van's dynamic sound to a broader Western audience.
