Where it came from
Released in 1989 by Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, this recording captures a selection of North German cantatas and motets centered on the Christmas theme of 'Vom Himmel hoch'. The album features the Knabenchor Hannover, a prestigious boys' choir founded in 1950, collaborating with the instrumental ensemble Fiori Musicali and conductor Heinz Hennig. Harald Vogel, a renowned specialist in historical organ performance, provides instrumental context that emphasizes the authentic, period-informed sound characteristic of the label's mission during this period.
The production was part of an era defined by a resurgence in the performance of Baroque liturgical music using historically informed practices. Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, highly regarded for its rigorous standards in early music, sought to highlight the technical brilliance and emotional austerity of the North German school. The recording was well received by critics for its clarity and the stylistic precision of the Knabenchor Hannover, serving as a testament to the enduring influence of Lutheran liturgical compositions from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
