Where it came from
Weihnachtssingen der Thomaner was released by Berlin Classics in 1997, featuring the renowned Thomanerchor under the direction of Hans-Joachim Rotzsch. This collection serves as a preservation of the centuries-old liturgical traditions of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, an institution famously associated with Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as its cantor. The recording was produced to capture the atmospheric and precise choral standard that has defined the choir's reputation for over 800 years.
The album reflects the austere yet resonant aesthetic common to classical German choral recordings of the late 20th century. By focusing on the pure acoustic qualities of the ensemble in their home space, the production aimed to provide listeners with an authentic experience of the German Advent and Christmas repertoire. It remains a notable example of the post-reunification efforts by Berlin Classics to curate and distribute the extensive back catalog of East German classical music institutions to a global audience.
