Where it came from
Weihnachtssingen Der Thomaner was released by Berlin Classics in 1993, capturing the storied tradition of the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig. The recording features the ensemble under the direction of Hans-Joachim Rotzsch, the choir's cantor from 1972 to 1991. It serves as a testament to the choir's centuries-old legacy, which is inextricably linked to the Thomaskirche and the tenure of J.S. Bach, presenting a selection of German Christmas carols and motets that define the choir's Advent repertoire.
The album reflects the post-reunification transition of the ETERNA label archives into the Berlin Classics catalog, preserving historically significant recordings for a wider international audience. The design and production aimed to maintain the austere, sacred aesthetic associated with the Thomanerchor's liturgical performances. The recording was well-received by classical music enthusiasts for its technical precision and its role in archiving the specific tonal characteristics of the choir during the late 20th century.
