Where it came from
This 1998 release from the Berlin Classics label compiles essential orchestral excerpts from the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. The collection serves as an anthology of German Romantic and post-Romantic orchestral traditions, bringing together iconic Vorspiele (preludes) such as those from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Das Rheingold, and Tristan und Isolde, alongside the vivid dramatic color of Strauss’s Salomes Tanz and the opulent textures of the Der Rosenkavalier Walzerfolgen.
The performances are conducted by Heinz Rögner, a prominent figure in the East German classical music scene who served as the principal conductor of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) for many years. Rögner was noted for his disciplined, structurally clear interpretations of the late-Romantic repertoire, avoiding excessive sentimentality in favor of balanced, transparent orchestral textures. This recording reflects the high technical standards of the RSB during the late twentieth century, capturing the orchestra's characteristic warmth and precision in interpreting these foundational works of the operatic canon.
