Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the Combo Records label, Y su pueblo represents a high point for El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, the legendary ensemble often referred to as 'Los Mulatos del Sabor.' By the mid-1980s, the group had already solidified their role as the primary ambassadors of Puerto Rican salsa, maintaining a consistent sound that balanced technical orchestral precision with the infectious, dance-oriented rhythms necessary for the island's social clubs.
The album reflects the collaborative spirit and seasoned artistry of bandleader Rafael Ithier, who founded the group in 1962. Throughout this period, the group refined a brass-heavy, piano-driven signature style that relied on tight vocal harmonies and relatable lyrics. Y su pueblo was received as a quintessential entry in their vast discography, lauded by fans and critics alike for its ability to preserve traditional salsa aesthetics during a decade when many Latin musical genres were shifting toward more experimental electronic syntheses.
