Where it came from
The 2017 Fresh Sound Records release of the 1957 Quintet Sessions highlights the brief but brilliant career of alto saxophonist John Jenkins. Recorded during his prime years in New York City, these tracks capture the essence of the mid-century hard bop movement, reflecting the virtuosic, blues-infused improvisation that characterized the era's small-group jazz scene.
This compilation draws from sessions that showcase Jenkins alongside contemporaries who helped define the bebop language of the late 1950s. Fresh Sound Records, known for its dedication to archiving rare and out-of-print jazz sessions, curated this collection to provide a focused look at an artist who, despite a relatively short discography, remains a respected figure among jazz historians and aficionados for his fluid phrasing and melodic inventiveness.
