Where it came from
The 2018 Prince Edward Island 1-cent coin was issued as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing commemorative program celebrating the centennial of the end of the First World War. While the traditional Canadian penny was officially discontinued in 2012, the Mint occasionally produces special non-circulating commemorative issues that pay homage to regional history and the national identity associated with the former provinces and colonies.
The design features the artistic sensibilities characteristic of the Mint’s commemorative series, blending the historical profile of Queen Elizabeth II with imagery reflective of Prince Edward Island's heritage. The coin serves as a nostalgic collector’s piece, intended for numismatists who appreciate the transition of Canadian currency from daily use to specialized historical documentation.
