1½ Euro (Capitals)

The 1½ Euro coin is part of a series of non-circulating legal tender coins issued by the Monnaie de Paris, specifically intended for collectors rather than daily commerce. This 2008 issue belongs to the 'Capitals of Europe' series, which sought to celebrate the cultural and architectural heritage of major European cities. These coins were minted in silver, reflecting the French mint's tradition of producing commemorative currency that bridges the gap between historical numismatic art and modern thematic collection.

The design of this series was executed by the artistic team at the Monnaie de Paris, who focused on intricate engravings of famous landmarks to appeal to both architecture enthusiasts and coin collectors. By utilizing a 1½ Euro denomination, the mint created a unique niche for these pieces, distinguishing them from the standard circulating euro coinage while maintaining the official status of the French Republic's currency. The series was well-received by the European numismatic community for its high-quality finish and its focus on pan-European unity through iconic imagery.
