Where it came from
Issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2024, this 1000 dram coin serves as a commemorative tribute to the legendary French-Armenian singer, songwriter, and diplomat Charles Aznavour. Released to honor his enduring cultural legacy and his profound contributions to the global recognition of Armenian identity, the coin is part of a broader series celebrating significant national figures. It was minted to coincide with ongoing efforts to commemorate his life following his passing in 2018, marking a moment of national pride and remembrance for the Armenian diaspora.
The coin features a portrait of Aznavour, capturing his iconic stage presence and recognizable features. Designed by Armenian artists tasked with blending traditional numismatic standards with the expressive character of the artist, the aesthetic focuses on clarity and respect for his public persona. As a legal tender commemorative piece, it was received primarily by collectors and admirers of Aznavour’s music, functioning both as a numismatic asset and a sentimental object for those who view his career as a bridge between Armenian heritage and French chanson.
