½ Rupee - Habibullah

The 1917 half-rupee coin was minted during the reign of Amir Habibullah Khan, who ruled Afghanistan from 1901 until 1919. This period was marked by the Amir's efforts to modernize his country's infrastructure, including the introduction of electric power and the establishment of the first modern schools, all while navigating the precarious political landscape between the British Empire and the Russian Empire. The coinage of this era reflects a transition toward more standardized, machine-struck currency intended to facilitate internal commerce and stabilize the Afghan economy.

The design of the coin features the characteristic tughra, a calligraphic emblem representing the Amir, which was a standard element of Afghan currency under the Barakzai dynasty. These coins were produced at the Kabul mint, utilizing improved striking techniques compared to earlier hammered issues. While the artistry reflects a blend of traditional Islamic calligraphic aesthetics and contemporary minting standards, the series is primarily valued today by numismatists as a tangible record of the administrative and fiscal evolution of Afghanistan during the final years of the Amir's rule.
