1000 Francos CFA (1996 Summer Olympics)

The 1000 Francos CFA coin was minted to commemorate the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia. Issued by Equatorial Guinea, it reflects the common practice of non-host nations participating in the global numismatic trend of celebrating major international sporting events through commemorative currency releases. These coins were typically produced for the international collector market rather than for domestic circulation, serving as a tangible memento of the Games.

The design follows the traditional aesthetic found in many commemorative coins of the mid-1990s, often featuring thematic iconography related to the athletic disciplines of the Olympic Games. As part of a series produced for Equatorial Guinea, the piece emphasizes high-relief imagery to appeal to collectors, prioritizing decorative artistic value and historical marking over functional monetary use within the issuing country's local economy.
