Where it came from
The 1996 1000 Leva coin was issued by the Bulgarian National Bank as part of a commemorative series celebrating the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. Although the games took place two years prior, Bulgaria issued these coins to honor their national athletes and the spirit of international winter sports competition, a common practice for smaller nations looking to promote their Olympic participation and numismatic heritage.
The design features a stylized depiction of a speed skater in motion, capturing the aerodynamic aesthetic associated with the sport during the mid-nineties. It was minted in copper-nickel as a standard collector's edition, intended to be accessible to a wide audience rather than being struck in precious metals. The coin reflects the minimalist aesthetic prevalent in Bulgarian commemorative coinage during the post-communist transition period.
