Where it came from
Released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2017 as part of the Canada 150 celebration, this commemorative coin honors the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The design sought to encapsulate the vast scale of the nation, choosing a satellite-inspired perspective to showcase Canada as it appears from space, highlighting the northern lights and the country's unique geography.
The coin features a distinct glow-in-the-dark effect, achieved through advanced photoluminescent technology applied to the reverse design. Created to engage collectors with a modern, interactive aesthetic, the piece was well-received for its innovative use of materials, which allowed the aurora borealis to illuminate after exposure to light, successfully merging traditional numismatic craft with contemporary artistic techniques.
