The Australian two-cent coin was first introduced in 1966 as part of the nation's transition to decimal currency, replacing the pound, shilling, and pence system. Struck in bronze, the coin featured the iconic frill-necked lizard on the reverse, designed by Stuart Devlin. This design became a staple of Australian pocket change for decades, representing the unique wildlife of the continent during a period of significant national modernization.

By 1992, the two-cent coin was withdrawn from circulation due to high production costs and low purchasing power, though it remained legal tender. The 2006 issue was minted exclusively for inclusion in annual collector sets produced by the Royal Australian Mint. These sets featured the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, which depicted a more mature monarch compared to earlier iterations.
