Where it came from
The Belgian 2½ Euro coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the European Space Agency was issued in 2025 to celebrate Belgium's foundational role in European space exploration. As one of the founding members of the agency in 1975, Belgium has maintained a significant commitment to space research, and this commemorative issue serves as a numismatic acknowledgement of five decades of institutional collaboration, scientific discovery, and international cooperation within the aerospace sector.
The coin's design, which features the portrait of King Philippe, follows the established tradition of Belgian commemorative currency by balancing national identity with the specific thematic focus of the European Space Agency. Produced at the Royal Mint of Belgium, the aesthetic reflects a modern approach to coin engraving, intended to appeal to both institutional collectors and space enthusiasts by capturing the symbolic intersection of the Belgian monarchy and the progress of the continent's collective space heritage.
